Monday's Quote 10/26/09

"Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase." Martin Luther King, Jr.

Hello All,
We have had a hard weekend. Adan is very ill and may even need to be put to sleep. Her platlette count is severely low and all of the reasons are bad, except for one. As you can imagine it has been a few days of tears and extra cuddling. We are waiting for one more test and then decisions will have to be made. She is her usual playful self and that is what makes it even harder. I will keep you posted. Other than that we are all getting over our collective colds and celebrated Alan's bday on Sunday.

Have a good week!

Deb, let me know when her Ehrlichia test comes back. Are they going to do another platelet count to see if they are still falling? I forgot to ask you that.
I'm so sorry. It's an awful decision to have to make.

The Ehrlichia test should be back Monday or Tuesday. I don't know about another platelet test, it went from 17 to 10 last week. I will keep you posted. Thanks again!

Sophie tested positive for Ehrlichia... it's a tick thing. I didn't realize it could be so serious. Does it have anything to do with the bad stuff she ate last week? I hope it all turns out OK... I'm so sorry. I know how emotional it can be.

I have had endless conversations with Dr. Reid regarding Sophie's leaking bladder. He really had me convinced she had kidney disease or cushings disease. Turns out, it nothing but drinking too much water. Maybe a second opinion???

I had to put Waffles down because of kidney disease. There was a lake of watered down urine for several days before I made my decision. Deb keep us posted.

Reagrding Sophie- is she diabetic? Not that you need one more thing to have to test. I'd give you a strip for her to pee on. I would suspect the doctor did her glucose when doing her "Cushing's" workup.

Sorry about Waffles Nance.

We know that Sophie isn't diabetic... no glucose in her pee.
All her bloodwork came back normal. They only thing to do now is to wait. She is now on DES which apparently doesn't cause cancer in dogs, just women. This drug has helped with the leaking bladded tremendously. Remember that big feeding and drinking bowl we bought her at the outlets? Well she will drink three or more of those a day. She should only be drinking one... 6-8 cups. Now we only fill it up 1/2 and she is drinking much less and not peeing everywhere. We also have to wean her off the other drug she is on. Hopefully in 10 days she will not be peeing again. If she is we need to do a water deprivation study where they dehydrate her and then take her urine.

We, collectively, have a lot of pet issues....

Nance, so sorry to hear about Waffles. The Adan update, Ehrlichia negative and everything else looked good. She is still her usual self, if you met her you know what I mean. Spoke to the vet yesterday and we are trying one round of meds. He has been researching and found that there have been recent cases of similar and dogs respond to low levels of steriods and 6 months later can be weened off. We will have a blood test on Nov 7th. As he said "before we pull the plug" lets just she if she responds to this. Clinical she has no other symptoms so we will just keep loving her and see how it goes.

Deb... I'm glad there is a little hope for Adan. The girls keep asking me. It's been dinner conversation for the past few nights.

Lauren has the flu... tested positive for Influenza A which the doc said is 95% accurate for H1N1. We are still feel fine... just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

I just hope she can make Halloween. She still hasn't gotten over throwing up all through xmas last year.

I'll keep you posted...

I'm glad Deb you're doing one round of steroids. You really never know.

As for H1N1, so many positive flu tests so far. In fact, if you are coming to the lab as an outpatient for a flu test, we are having you pull up in your car to the front door, having a tech with a mask go to your car and take the sample so you don't contaminate everyone in the hospital. Drive up service. Not everyone is getting this but a lot are. Trying to keep everyone healthy. 150 kids out from middle school yesterday. So far here everyone is good, but they are dropping like flies.

Waffles was my first dog that I put down a while ago.
