We are seriously lacking in the blogging front so here is my update:
Florida was beautiful with weather in the 80's. Too bad I was working the entire time but did get Tuesday afternoon to go to EPCOT. Not that much fun without the family but did everything I would never do with the kids and ed - like eat in France and watch the corny movies. My flight was cancelled coming home so it took me 12 hours to get from Orlando to Hartford and had the pleasure of visting the Baltimore airport. (Not!)
My Dad's surgery went well - no blood clots and no complications. And he doesn't have his Kangaroo pouch any more. He is still drugged on percocet so it makes for interesting conversations.
Work is crazy but when is it not lately.
Kids are good - spending all their time playing Wii. In my eyes it was a great investment. They are getting more exercise than the summer.
Dan - just wondering what's going on with Phil...
Deb - what's it like to have your husband not in school?
Nancy - how's the car search going?

We went back to Dr. Weber today. They would really like to see us have pins put into phil's hip and leg (3 in the hip, 2 in the leg) and an external fixation bar. This is totally up to us. She did say it could (the entire femotal head) collapse at any minute without the pins and she can't guarantee it won't collapse even if we did do the pins. We have a much better chance of it not collapsing with pins so i really do think we're going that route. I did get a name of a Dr. Smith from yale who I have to make a second opinion appt. with. Otherwise, Phil wants to have pins put in believe it or not. They would only be in for 4 months and he could go to school. Surgery is done on a Friday and we'd be home on Monday. A lot to thinkk about. It would hapen either the first or second Friday of February. She said it was a prioroty surgery and they bump other patients in order to get this done. That's it but that's enough.
Dan: I am a little out of the loop on Phil. I thought you said you had this when you were little. Did you have pins put in?
My car search is on the back burner. The thought is that if the music thing falls apart then I would be stuck with a van and neither Norb or I like the idea so now Norb is thinking about a Jeep Grand Cherokee to replace the Liberty. I did a mileage check on the Liberty and got 14.93 miles per gallon city driving.
Anyone know where I can get popcorn balls? Norb says they only sell them @ Christmas and they are my new favorite snack.
pop corn balls nance usually only come out between halloween & xmas. Heres my recipe.
2-1/2 quarts popped popcorn (or a bunch of pop corn, not microwave).
1 14-ounce package caramels
1/4 cup light corn syrup
2 tablespoons water
Instructions
Keep the popped corn warm in a 200-degree F. oven. Melt the caramels in the top of a double boiler over simmering water. Add the corn syrup and water and mix until smooth.
Slowly pour over the popcorn in a large bowl or pan. Stir to mix well. With greased hands, shape the mixture into balls about the size of softballs.
Let the balls cool and dry completely before wrapping (you can make them the day before). Wrap in plastic wrap.
makes 15 popcorn balls
otherwise, no I didn't have pins put in, they didn't do that back then. it's a new thing. 40 yrs ago they put you in braces and you stayed that way for 1-2 years.
I can't get an early appt. at Yale so i think we may forgo the 2nd opinion and just do it to get it over with. The time line from now to 4 months would have the pins out in June just as school gets out so it would be a good thing. Mark is agreeing with me.
Dan - I agree maybe just get it over with. Will he still be able to walk? How big is external device? Would you be able to see it? The thought that it could collapse is scary. 4 months isn't that bad and, your right, by summer it will be over.
Nancy, I'm laughing at your popcorn ball story because just this morning I went into by cabinet and an open bag of popcorn balls fell out at me. I was actually going to throw them out because my kids loved them at christmas but now could care less. I'll save them for you - can't promise they won't be stale though. Also, my friend Karen is in the fire dept in Derby. They have a tradition in December that they drive around town in a parade of fire trucks throwing popcorn balls to the kids. I guess the kids all know to come out of the house when they hear the sirens. It's called popcorn ball Sunday. I'll ask her where they got them.
Dan - do you actually make popcorn balls? I'm impressed!
Deb - Where are you????? Ask your husband why we have to have a delay for slush!!!!!! My dad had a doc appt this morning so it caused chaos in my house and Ed ended up having to stay home.
I am here, sorry. Tyler has strep throat so we were at the doctor this morning. The new Super is from Brookfield and will get into the swing I am sure. His old district also had a delay.
Popcorn balls????
Dan, sounds like a good plan for Phil. At least then he will look forward to summer and not be in anything when it is hot. Hang in there.
I got the online teaching job for the state and I start next week so I have all new stuff to learn. Alan is good. We are still hectic here with night school, BOE and swim.
Jordan and I are going to NJ tomorrow. Jordan is sleeping at Jack's and I will stay with my sister. Thats about it.
Popcorn balls???
Deb - Congrats on the online gig. My new class started Wed - Marketing. How hard can that be. I am the worlds best consumer so I have lots of experience.
Sorry about Ty's strep. Enjoy the night away.
Dan: Thanks for the popcorn ball recipe...I will have to try that...
I agree with the rest...get the pins...keep us informed...
El Mariachi Sat 1/26 is now starting around 8:30 or 9...we will be in the bar as they reduced the size of the restaurant...if anyone is game? Lynn bring the popcorn balls to El Mariachi's if you can!
Surgery is now scheduled for February 8th. We should be home on Monday. A would think we'd be home the rest of the week and winter break is the following mon & tues so we only miss 8 days school total. And to think the pins will be out before summer is good. There's so much more to this that will have to wait until we meet again for dinner.
And I haven't even told you my crazy brother stories yet. He's having a mid-life crisis on top of all this. The only thing I can say is that my mother (who is now in Florida) keeps telling him his next of kin is "your sister". Kind of puts that ball in my lap, huh?!
So, only one crazy thing at a time and this is not my brother's time. I'll let you know any new details as they happen. I sound like a friggin news cast.
I won't be able to go to El Mariachi's, sorry Nance. Sorry about strep throat too Deb.
